About Julie Basello-Holt

I was born and raised in Flushing, NY and currently reside in southern New Jersey. My photographic roots extend back to my parent's old 110 camera. I also had a neighbor growing up who was really into 35 mm photography and I was always amazed at how good the pictures she took came out. Then for my 18th birthday I received a 35mm camera and I have been hooked ever since. Largely self-taught, I work primarily in digital photography but can also work in 35mm film for a session if needed.

My subjects range from portraits to nature to still life to interiors for decorators to jewelry and the list goes on. I seek to capture a mood or the spirit of the subject as I see it. Architecture, especially urban decay,  is among my favorite things to photograph and the older and more decrepit the building, the better. I believe that our society has evolved into a disposable one, where old buildings are something to be torn down and replaced with generic structures bearing no architectural value. It seems that the days of architecture as art are gone or nearing extinction and by photographing old, interesting structures, I feel that I am helping to preserve a small part of yesterday and today. It is my hope that people will look at my photographs and feel some of what I felt when I was pressing the shutter.

Portraits are another one of my favorite photographic assignments...but I always want to create atypical showcases of my subject.  I try to capture the essence of a person  rather than something that is stilted. My subject may be posed (sometimes it is necessary as much as I hate doing it) but I try to keep things as far from ordinary as I can. I feel that a photo shoot works best when it is very interactive so I try to create an easy environment that encourages my subject to be themselves. Laughter is encouraged...since I am not all that funny (although I have my moments) I look to my subject for interaction all the time. There is a really unique thing that happens when people interact and connect with positive energy...the results usually speak volumes.
